  • Investigated the hydrogeologic setting of a potential 25-million tonne landfill site in an open pit mine near Marmora, Ontario.
  • Conducted hydrogeologic studies for over 50 operating and potential landfill sites, including private landfills, industrial landfills, and a variety of small and large (over 20M tonnes) municipal landfills.
  • Conducted preliminary assessment studies of over 100 abandoned landfill sites for the Ontario Ministry of the Environment and Metro Toronto.
  • Designed and implemented constructed wetlands and infiltration basins for leachate and stormwater treatment.
  • Designed and implemented leachate pumping wells to control water table mounding in landfills.
  • Designed and implemented various leachate collection systems for remediating landfill impacts during operation and after completion.
  • Completed detailed hydrogeological assessment of proposed residential development lands on the Oak Ridges Moraine (ORM) in Richmond Hill, Ontario. Work was completed as part of Master Environmental Servicing Plan and Secondary Plan studies. Conducted long-term groundwater and surface water monitoring, drainage basin surveys, calculated water balances and developed constraint mapping for the development, focussing on potential impacts to wetland and kettle lake complexes. Work was presented at OMB hearing regarding development on the ORM.
  • Conducted a pilot test and feasibility study to use infiltration facilities for stormwater management and maintenance of groundwater recharge conditions in two development areas on the ORM.
  • Completed detailed hydrogeological assessments of several proposed residential and golf course development sites on the ORM in Uxbridge, Ontario. Conducted water supply drilling and testing, sewage effluent disposal testing, drainage mapping, groundwater and surface water sampling, calculated pre- and post-development water balances and developed best management practices to maintain recharge and hydrogeological function of the development lands.
  • Involved in the design and implementation of rapid infiltration basins for effluent disposal at the Innisfil landfill.
  • Completed aquifer mapping, water budget calculations and assessment of stormwater management options for the Downsview Development Project.
  • Completed hydrogeological assessments of proposed development lands (residential and commercial) in Stouffville, Ontario. Studies in support of Secondary Plan and Draft Plan involved detailed characterization of geological setting, groundwater flow conditions, groundwater/surface water interactions, drainage, pre-and post-development water balance, and identification of development constraints to maintain hydrogeological functions.
  • Conducted a hydrogeological investigation to assess shallow subsurface flow conditions, infiltration capacity of soils and recharge conditions for the construction of stormwater management facilities at a subdivision development in Cobourg, Ontario.
  • Completed a hydrogeological assessment and feasibility study for sewage effluent disposal from large-scale leaching beds at a subdivision development site on the ORM in East Gwillimbury.

Greenhouse Gas Projects:
  • Developed a bioreactor system at a landfill in Toronto that reduces greenhouse gas emissions. The system creates aerobic conditions in the landfill which prevents the production of methane (a greenhouse gas). In addition, the bioreactor system controls odourous gas emissions, accelerates the decomposition process and allows healthy reforestions over the entire site.
  • Designed and implemented a variety of positive-pressure barriers to control landfill gas migration. These systems provide a high level of protection to abutting properties and eliminate the need to exhaust and treat the landfill gases.
  • Evaluation of subsurface landfill gas migration patterns around landfills and development of gas venting systems.

Remediation Projects:
  • Designed a leachate collection system consisting of 26 wells and a gravity drain on the site perimeter to capture a leachate plume at the Innisfil landfill site (1995).
  • Designed and implemented a groundwater containment well system for the Uniroyal Chemical plant at Elmira, Ontario. The system includes several pumping wells that captured contaminated groundwater in deep sand and gravel aquifers beneath the plant site (1991).
  • Designed and implemented a combined groundwater/vapour containment system for a fuel and chlorinated solvent spill site in Toronto. The system includes a vertical geomembrane barrier for vapour control, a gravity drain to collect contaminant plumes, a sub-floor vapour extraction system for soil clean-up and a groundwater flushing system.
  • Supervised the clean up of PCE-contaminated soil at an industrial property in Mississauga, and provided certification of the site clean-up (1996).
  • Provided liaison with government, municipal and public representatives to resolve remediation strategies for numerous landfills and industrial spills throughout Ontario.

Landfill Projects:
  • Involved in a pilot-test of aerobic landfill technology to reduce methane emissions at a municipal landfill in Simcoe County, Ontario.
  • Completed hydrogeological investigations at a flyash waste disposal site in Mississauga. The work included long-term water quality and landfill gas monitoring and the design and testing of a groundwater containment well system.
  • Completed detailed hydrogeological studies to address leachate migration, designed leachate and gas control systems, and developed long-term monitoring programs to support proposed expansion hearings for several large southern Ontario landfills.
  • Completed an impact assessment for a pulp mill waste disposal facility focussing on surface water issues. Responsible for annual monitoring reports for the facility in compliance with Ministry of the Environment Certificate of Approval requirements.
  • Coordinated and completed risk assessments at 14 closed landfill sites in Metropolitan Toronto, focussing on landfill gas impacts.
  • Responsible for the annual hydrogeological evaluations and monitoring reports for various municipal and private landfill sites.

Aggregate Resources:
  • Completed a detailed hydrogeological evaluation of an active aggregate extraction operation in Caledon, Ontario.
  • Conducted a hydrogeologic assessment of existing and proposed sand and gravel extractions for TCG Materials. The work included an assessment of the impacts of below water table gravel extraction on adjacent groundwater resources and a cold water stream. The work included successfully defending an application for an extraction license at an OMB Hearing.
  • Conducted hydrogeologic assessments of proposed gravel extraction below the water table and potential groundwater and surface water impacts for Cox Construction at two Puslinch Township properties.
  • Assisted in investigations of groundwater contamination and interference complaints; reviewed applications for subdivisions, pits and quarries.
  • Involved in an aggregate resources inventory of the Bruce Mines to Blind River area for the Ontario Geological Survey. Responsible for assessing the potential of the Nipissing Diabase as an aggregate material. See publication list for reference.
  • Completed a detailed hydrogeological evaluation of an active aggregate extraction operation in Caledon, Ontario.
